Spotlight Series 25 Erika Ugianskis

Spotlight Series 25
Erika Ugianskis

Meet this month’s spotlight:

Erika Ugianskis, a physician-an interventional radiologist serving as the Medical Director of Interventional Radiology for Indiana University Health Arnett Hospital – and – an education consultant for the Terumo Medical Corporation where she travels around the country to teach other physicians about minimally invasive procedures.

Best piece of advice you've ever received?

My dad told me once when I was going through a difficult time in practice to hang in there, as it will all be different in 6 months. He was right. I have since shared this advice with my sons.

What was your path to getting where you are today?

After earning Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Kinesiology at the University of California, Los Angeles, I attended Northwestern University Medical School, where I earned my medical degree. I subsequently completed my diagnostic radiology residency at Northwestern University Medical School. I then completed my fellowship in Interventional Radiology at Rush University Medical School. I have been in practice for 23 years. I continue to love what I do. I’m very grateful for my skills. They have given me the privilege to take care of people, often when they are at their sickest and most vulnerable.

What do you love about being a woman?

I enjoy simultaneously projecting strength and softness, for example: having a muscular physique while dressing to look feminine and stylish.

What are you watching, reading, and listening to right now?

My son Nino rows for USC crew, so I’ve taken a deep plunge into the sport of rowing. I just finished reading The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown, and started reading Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus.

Given that my son Rocco is a 7’3” college basketball player, I watch a lot of college basketball.

How do you take care of yourself?

I’m big on routine. In times of high stress, routine sustains me. I subscribe to what we refer to in our household as “The Trifecta”-eat well, sleep well, and move your body. If one of these things is off, you must max out the other two. The consistency in my habits has kept me lean, fit and healthy.

If you could live anywhere (and money is no object), where would you choose?

Rome!

Best gift you've ever received?

My parents gave me their 1961 Porsche Roadster when I graduated from medical school. I drive it to this day.

How would you describe your personal style?

By virtue of my tall stature (I’m 6 ft tall), I stand out whether I want to or not. I favor modern styles with an edge or some unique detail that makes a statement. I gravitate towards minimalist looks, the color black, asymmetric hems, long lengths, and ruching.

What is important to you when it comes to buying clothing?

Modern style, comfort and ease of care are the top 3 elements. Maria Pinto hits all of these like no one else.

Given my busy schedule, having a stylist who is readily available to work with has been extraordinarily helpful. I work with Jeannette who has come to know me exceptionally well. She knows my style and sizing well which makes shopping very enjoyable and easy.

Who are some of your style or fashion icons?

I grew up with the “supers”– Linda, Naomi, Christy, and Cindy. Linda Evangelista is my favorite. I loved her androgynous looks when she cut her hair short. She’s such a chameleon even to this day. I love the edgy vibe of Alexander McQueen, the minimalism of Helmut Lang, and the sensuality of Tom Ford.

What are your favorite Maria Pinto pieces? Why?

Uma! She’s the ultimate multipurpose tunic. She’s great with skinny jeans, the Rani pant or by herself as a cover up by the pool. Isabella! So simple, elegant and versatile. She’s great with tall boots in the winter and with sandals in the summer. Wear her with or without a belt.

What are some of your favorite features of the Maria Pinto collection?

The Maria Pinto collection exudes a modern elegance that is unique and timeless. Her pieces range from structured and minimal to fun and whimsical. They work for all occasions. I wear something of hers everyday, whether I’m seeing patients, traveling, attending a conference, or out to dinner. There’s an ease about wearing her clothes. You can literally just pull something over your head and within an instant look absolutely amazing!
